The Best Ways of Energy Conservation in the Home

Previous blogs have discussed the importance of everyone doing their part to increase efforts to living as green as possible. No initiative is too small or insignificant. This includes initiatives in the home to conserve energy. Renewable energy is energy created from sources that are naturally replenished. Use of such resources has become a growing trend. A few examples are listed below:
Solar Energy
Most home improvement stores offer solar panel kits that allow you to create free, clean, and renewable energy from the sun. An added benefit is that solar panels can be used on boats, RVs, campers, and cabins.

 Hydro Power
Those who have a water source on their property can benefit immensely from hydropower. Diverting water to flow through a turbine provides stable and substantial amounts of power for the home. It is not only stable but continuous as well. The piece of mind and long-run savings are worth the effort.
Wind Turbines
Dependent on the wind speed and weather of the area, wind turbines can be installed on your property for power to the home. They are not as popular due to their size and the noise they create, but for some, they are ideal and produce most or all of the electricity needed.

Those who are not quite ready to take the plunge into alternative energy can still employ different practices in the home to conserve energy such as:
  • Turning off lights and appliances when not in use. Decrease use of energy-intensive appliances.
  • Replace traditional light bulbs with CFLs or LEDs that use significantly less power.
  • Switch to a smart or programmable thermostat that can be set to turn off or change temperatures when no one is home.
  • Purchase appliances that are energy efficient.
  • Install windows that are double paneled and energy efficient.
Any change you make in the home has a huge impact financially and for the environment. Finite resources such as coal or natural gas will dwindle as usage continues in addition to being costly. Alternative resources will never run out and allow for financial resources to be used elsewhere.
